Athlete Spotlight Steven Murray

What was your fitness like before you came to MECKA Fitness?
Ugh, pretty limited. An occasional run or trip to the gym but nothing consistent.

How long have you been working out with us and how did you get into it?
I’ve been working out at Mecka for about a year and like all of my fitness adventures my wife signed me up.
What were your thoughts after your first workout here?
I thought I was in over my head but the staff was so encouraging that it made it easy to come back and try again.
What were your goals when joining us?
To get moving again and drop a few pounds.
Since joining what physical and mental transformations have you made? Tell us about that.
Physically I’ve lost 30 plus pounds and feel great. Mentally its be to redefine what’s important and to prioritize healthier living.
What inspired you to make such a drastic change to get healthier? What or who was the biggest motivator?
I just started feeling really tired and old. My wife and kids are very active and I wanted to be able to keep up with them.
What has been the most challenging part of your journey? Biggest obstacles?
The biggest challenge has been getting my diet under control. I was a big stress (and over) eater so finding better ways to manage my stress.

I started with my diet and making much healthier food choices. Eating healthier made me feel so much better and gave me a boost of energy and confidence, which lead to better workouts. I found that starting with small changes helped build momentum to make bigger changes and carry me through the days I didn’t feel my best.
What advice would you give someone looking to start a similar journey?
Just show up. The workouts will take care of themselves. From the staff to everyone working out, Mecka has such great energy and an encouraging atmosphere.
Knowing how far you’ve come, if you could give your past self-advice, what would it be?
Start with small changes and build on the little wins.

How do you feel about the coaching staff here? Who has inspired you the most?
The staff at MECKA been amazing and one of the biggest reasons I’ve accomplished as much as I have. Early on it was April in Body Lab, who was always supportive and got me to push a little bit more. Now it’s Corinne and the post spin high-fives.
Calories don’t count. Describe your most epic cheat meal.
Pizza with a side of pizza. That’s the one thing I haven’t been able to find a substitute for.
